Thousands attend 36th Annual Metro Detroit Youth Day on Belle Isle

DETROIT (WJBK) - Thousands of students and volunteers were on Belle Isle Wednesday for the 36th Annual Metro Detroit Youth Day. 

This summer staple unites youth in the city and metro area with a day of sports, fun and constructive activities. 

This event has grown annually from some 1,100 participants the first year to more than 35,000 youth in 2016. Nearly 2,000 people volunteer as well, and represent hundreds of different organizations and businesses. 

The day is more than just fun and games, though. It also has grown to include youth guidance, mentors, role models, anti-substance abuse activity and motivational speakers. Dozens of college scholarships are also available. 

"We wanted to inspire our kids to do the most good. We want them to grow up, go to college, become our future leaders and make Michigan a great state again," says co-founder Ed Deebs. 

All Metro Detroit Youth Day attendees are required to register in advance of the event or on-site at the registration area on Belle Isle's athletic fields. A form of identification is required for all participating youth.
