Tree-lighting ceremonies take place in Detroit and Lansing

DETROIT (AP) -- Tree-lighting ceremonies are taking place in Lansing and Detroit as the Christmas season gets into full swing in Michigan.

A 66-foot spruce from the western Upper Peninsula has been set up at the Capitol to serve as this year's state Christmas tree. The tree is from Wakefield, east of Ironwood, and has been donated by Florence Daniels in memory of her late husband, Jim Daniels.

A tree lighting and fireworks display is Friday night at Lansing's Silver Bells in the City celebration.

Following last week's attacks in Paris, Lansing police said they planned a highly visible presence for the event.

In Detroit, a giant Salvation Army kettle will be lit at downtown's Campus Maritus as part of an annual fundraising effort. Lights on a 60-foot-tall spruce then will be lit.
