DHS releases a statement
The other side:
The Department of Homeland Security released a statement to FOX 11 Friday.
"On January 14, Border Patrol conducted enforcement operation in the Montebello, CA area. These operations resulted in the arrest of five [undocumented immigrants], from Mexico and Guatemala, who have all broken the immigration laws of this country.
These individuals will remain in custody pending further immigration proceedings. Under President Trump and Secretary Noem, those who are here illegally can take control of their departure with the CBP Home App. The United States is offering [undocumented immigrants] $1,000 and a free flight to self-deport now. We encourage every person here illegally to take advantage of this offer and reserve the chance to come back to the U.S. the right legal way to live the American dream. If not, you will be arrested and deported without a chance to return."
The backstory:
The nationwide ICE raids have been taking place since the start of President Donald Trump's second term in office. Over the last year, the mass-deportation efforts by the Trump administration have led to countless protests, in addition to violence involving ICE agents
