Yelp's top 50 places to eat in Detroit this year

It's true that Yelp can make or break a restaurant, but right now it's a very effective way of sorting through Detroit's evergrowing and everchanging restaurant scene.

Yelp just released its list of the top 50 places to eat in 2018 in Detroit. Yelp took into consideration the number of stars in each review, but also the number of reviews that have been left for each place.

Annette Jankin with Yelp points out, of course, that these 50 places only scratch the surface of the eateries available in Detroit right now. She joined us on The Nine to talk more with us about the restaurants.

The restaurants offer a variety of dining in Detroit. They range from tacos to brunch, from small plates to fine dining. You can view the full top 50 list here, and hear more from Annette about the top five in the video player above.

Chartreuse in Midtown rang in at #1. It's got a fine dining feel with a small plates vibe near the Detroit Institute of Arts. It's known for its extensive selection of chartreuse, a French liqueur made by the Carthusian Monks. Right now, the restaurant has 435 reviews with an average of 4.5 stars.

Number two is Pie Sci, a pizza place in Woodbridge that cooks up your basic pizza favorites alongside obscure concoctions. It has 107 reviews with an average of 4.5 stars.

Number three is Dime Store -- which clocked in the most reviews in this Top 5 list. It has a 4.5 star rating with 918 reviews. It's a brunch hot spot downtown.

Number four is 2941 Street Food, a fast, casual build-your-own style place that offers bowls and wraps with Mediterranean flare. It also has other locations in Rochester Hills, Auburn Hills, Birmingham and Bloomfield. The Midtown location has 4.5 stars with 134 reviews.

And the number five spot goes to Taqueria El Rey, a spot in southwest Detroit known for its tacos. It has 4.5 stars with 255 reviews.
