DETROIT (WJBK/AP) - The Detroit Tigers announced Tuesday they have traded OF Leonys Martin and RHP Kyle Dowdy to the Cleveland Indians in exchange for SS Willi Castro right before the 4pm non-waiver trade deadline.
Castro, 21, is hitting .245 through 91 games this season for AA Akron. The switch hitter also has five home runs with 20 doubles & 39 RBI. The Puerto Rico native was named an Eastern League All-Star and was ranked as the Indians number 8 prospect according to MLB Pipeline.
Martin, 30, is in his first season with the Tigers and hitting .251 with nine home runs and 29 RBI in 78 games.
He has a $1.75 million salary, of which the Indians are responsible for $573,925. He has earned $600,000 in bonuses based on plate appearances, and would earn $100,000 each for 350 and each additional 25 through 475 plus $50,000 for 500.
More importantly, he is under club control through next season through arbitration.
Dowdy, 25, has an 8-8 record with a 4.74 ERA with 92 strikeouts between AA & AAA this season.
