WATCH: Wojo & Jamie React to Calvin Johnson News
The Detroit Lions are sitting at home this first weekend of the NFL playoffs but one of their stars on the field is considering sitting at home for good.
Calvin Johnson released a statement Wednesday saying he is evaluating his options for the future:
"Like many players at this stage of their career, I am currently evaluating options for my future. I would expect to have a decision regarding this matter in the not-too-distant future."
The 30-year-old Johnson has been named to the Pro Bowl six times and played every down as a Detroit Lion, racking up more than 1,000 yards in seven of his nine seasons. However, Johnson hasn't seen many games in the playoffs with the Lions reaching the playoffs just twice, both losses in Wild Card games.
FOX 2's Dan Miller spoke with someone with knowledge of the situation. That person said while the statement doesn't mention retirement, that is what Johnson's statement is about.
News of Johnson's possible retirement was first reported by 97.1's Terry Foster who cited an unnamed teammate who said Johnson is "seriously considering" retirement.
The Detroit Lions also released a statement as Johnson released his:
"We obviously have profound respect for Calvin and certainly understand and appreciate his decision to give proper thought and consideration to his football future."
