Michigan-Based Blake's Hard Cider and Gypsy Spirits Collaborate on Limited-Edition Apple Pie Vodka
ARMADA, Mich. – Aug. 28, 2023 – It’s a match made in Michigan. Armada’s Blake’s Hard Cider (BHC) and Petoskey-based Gypsy Spirits have teamed up for the first time to create a seasonal batch Apple Pie Vodka. The limited-edition 40-proof spirit will be sold initially onsite at all Blake’s Tasting Room locations and Gypsy’s Tasting Rooms beginning Aug. 28 before expanded distribution to Michigan retailers including Meijer, Total Wine, and independent retailers in September. Infused with BHC’s famous fresh pressed apple cider directly from Blake’s orchard, cinnamon, and brown sugar, the Apple Pie Vodka is a smooth, easy drinking vodka that tastes like a fall dessert in a glass. Gypsy Vodka, founded in 2015 by twin brothers Michael and Adam Kazanowski, began producing a small batch apple pie vodka in 2020 but, restrained by limited production capacity, it was only available at its Tasting Room. Through the BHC partnership this year and their ability to source apples from their family-owned farm, the company is able to scale up and produce enough product to release the new Apple Pie Vodka statewide. The 750mL bottle (20% ABV) will retail at $24.95. “When we first began talks with Blake’s about this collaboration we were literally blown away,” said Michael Kazanowski, co-founder, Gypsy Vodka. “We have followed and admired Blake's story and rise since we began our company in 2015, so this partnership allows us the opportunity to work with one of the best cider houses in the country to finally release this limited-edition vodka to people all over the state.” This is BHC’s first venture in the spirits category but one they have wanted to develop for a while. The company obtained a distiller’s license several years ago to pursue apple-centric beverage opportunities outside of hard cider. “We knew we had one shot to do this properly and had to partner with a company as passionate about their products as we are and I believe we found that with Michael, Adam and their team,” said Andrew Blake, president, Blake’s Hard Cider. “The end result is the best of both our worlds for our companies and customers, and we look forward to other potential collaborations in the future.” Visit www.gypsyvodka.com and www.blakeshardcider.com for more information.

New program will ensure that kids get nutritious food for the weekends
Higher Hopes! has great news for families with students enrolled in the Head Start programs in Detroit for the 2023-2024 school year. The 501 (C)(3) is very pleased to announce that it has partnered with Blessings in a Backpack to provide nutritious and delicious food for the weekend so students return to school on Mondays ready to learn. Blessings in a Backpack is a national organization that helps put together food meal kits that are sent home with children for the weekend. The menus for food sent home on Fridays are designed by a licensed dietician, a team of educators, and kids. The food is shelf-stable and can be eaten without the aid of can openers, microwaves, or even refrigerators. Perfect for tiny hands, the food is also healthy and places an emphasis on high fiber and protein. The food is meant to ensure that kids no longer go hungry on the weekends. Surveys conducted by the organization have found that Blessings in a Backpack participants also experience the following impact: • 78% feel cared for by their community • 71% feel they are helping their family • 70% say their attendance at school is better • 69% say it is easier to learn • 67% say their family is happier • 62% say they are hungry less often • 60% have fewer behavioral issues at school “We are so excited to bring this program to our Head Start facilities in Detroit and even more excited to help stamp out weekend hunger pangs,” says Bill Birndorf, founder of Higher Hopes! “We’re now accepting donations to help support this program and people can do so on our website at www.higherhopesdetroit.org. It’s an amazing program as only $150 will see one child given weekend food throughout the entire school year. For the first year our aim is to provide weekend food to a minimum of 1,500 children per month and we are aggressively working to raise $200,000 to fund this program. Looking forward, our long-term goal is to grow the number of children reached each year. With this very important and meaningful program we want kids to come to school on Monday morning without the pains of hunger that they might experience without our involvement.” Corporate and individual contributions are always welcome and can be made at www.higherhopesdetroit.org or on Facebook at www.facebook.com/higherhopesdetroit. Free Program for Metro Detroit Women to Learn Computer Skills Plus Obtain Employment-related Counseling in Fall 2023
A free four-week program for metro Detroit women who have been out of the workforce and need to learn basic computer skills, essential for many employment opportunities, and job search skills, will have an informational meeting on Sept. 7 at Gesher Human Services (29699 Southfield Road, Southfield MI 48076). The program, Springboard to Success, combines the nonprofit’s successful Women to Work program, which has helped thousands of women obtain work since the 1980s, with Gesher’s Computer Basics Class for job seekers. Women who believe their chief obstacle to successfully search for and secure a job is a lack of computer knowledge, can just take the computer training portion of the program. Earlier this year, a report from American Progress stated that despite women’s employment levels having returned to pre-pandemic levels, having minor children at home still disproportionally reduces a woman’s employment opportunities. Springboard to Success will begin on Sept. 12 and run on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to noon, ending on Oct. 5. For more information go to www.geshermi.org/womentowork. “With inflation and mortgage rates so high, we know that many moms are now thinking about going back into the workforce this school year to help their family’s budget,” explained Employment Specialist Judy Richmond, who is the Women to Work coordinator. “There can be many obstacles to a woman getting appropriate employment, especially when their children are young, and we are able to provide the vital skills they need to land a job which works for them, whether it is full-time, part-time, or remote.” The program is completely free and includes: • Computer basics: creating, editing, saving, and moving files; keyboard and mouse usage; navigating the internet; translating tech terms; the cloud; safety • In-depth vocational assessment • Employment-related group counseling and emotional support • Help with networking, resume writing and interviewing • Stress management • Information and referrals to support services Richmond added that stress management is an important part of the program because of the added pressures so many women have faced in recent years from the pandemic and the economy. “Many women remain their family’s primary caregivers, whether that is for children or looking after elderly relatives, and we know that to be successful at balancing work and family, keeping stress in check is vital,” she explained. Women to Work was a program founded in the 1980s to help women who suddenly needed immediate employment due to bereavement, divorce, loss of a spouse’s job or other similar situations. The program has helped more than 2,000 women in Wayne, Macomb and Oakland counties prepare themselves to get back into the workforce.
