Heat advisory, thunderstorm watches in effect

A Heat Advisory is in effect for all of southeast Michigan until 10:00 p.m. on Friday, July 22.

Temperatures are expected to be in the 90s with high humidity and it will get hotter as the week continues.

In fact, the FOX 2 Weather Authority reports the heat index in many cities across metro Detroit reached the high 80s and even low 90s by 11 a.m. already on Thursday. (The heat index isn't what registers on the thermometer - it's how hot it feels outside with the humidity in play.)

FOX 2's Weather Authority Derek Kevra tells us the official heat is actually recorded in the shade, so if you're out in the sun it will likely be a lot hotter than the temperatures you're seeing on TV or on your weather apps.

WEEKEND WEATHER

The FOX 2 Weather Authority team says the high temperatures and humidity will be the trend for us all weekend long, with the heat index reaching near triple digits for us all days. We won't find much relief overnight, either, with the heat index staying in the low 80s.

This isn't the type of heat where you need to cancel your plans, just remember to drink plenty of water, wear loose clothing and take breaks from the sunshine.

Saturday and Sunday look dry, but when temperatures that high mix with high humidity, you never know when some rain or a storm could pop up. You can get a look at the full weekend forecast and our chance for upcoming storms by watching Derek's forecast in the video player.

If you don't have air, you can also take a break at some cooling centers around the city. More than a dozen public libraries are serving as cooling centers, as well as four recreation centers in Detroit to name a few.  You can get a full list of cooling centers here.

SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCHES

A severe thunderstorm watch is also in effect for some many counties in Michigan, though none in the immediate tri-county area. The closest areas included in the watch right now include Lapeer and Sanilac counties. These watches expire at 5 p.m. tonight.

Stay with the FOX 2 Weather Authority team as the forecast continues to develop for today.

You can also download the FOX 2 Weather App and keep an eye on the radar yourself, and stay up-to-date with alerts if severe weather becomes possible in your area.

Many schools in Detroit are also closing early this week due to the heat. For a full list of school closings, visit www.fox2detroit.com/closings.
