Fire tears through a Lincoln Park home early Saturday morning off Mayflower Street, one of the oldest homes in the neighborhood.

"3 people and 4 dogs died there less than 24 hours ago, that's what gets me," Troutt said.

Two women, a 4-year-old boy and their four dogs weren't able to escape the flames.

Neighbors say the fire spread so quickly the two women and child inside didn't have a chance of getting out, they watched helplessly as the flames spread.

"Couldn't be done, nothing I could do I tried," he said.

Dewey Troutt has been living across the street from this family for 35 years.

He was able to help a man with physical disabilities out of the house, he was the only survivor.

One of the women who died was his wife, the other his caretaker, and the 4-year-old was a nephew.

"He wanted to go in but I wouldn't let him," he said.

Lincoln Park Police have not released a cause of the fire; they tell FOX 2 they're still investigating.

"Smoke probably got to them before the flames did," Troutt said.

Dewey says usually there are more children in the family staying at this home on Mayflower but thankfully they weren't there when the fire sparked.

"Lot of good times, now they are gone."

Neighbors say the man who survived this fire was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation, his condition is unknown at this time. Dewey says his thoughts are obviously with that family.

Donations for the family can be sent to the GoFundMe page.
