Amber alert still active while autopsy results pending

DETROIT (WJBK) - An Amber alert is still in effect this Monday morning for little Savannah Walker. The 4-year-old was reported missing over the weekend along with her mother, Heidi. A man wanted in connection with their disappearance has turned himself in after the body of an adult female and a child were found in a burned-out home in Detroit.

The bodies were found on Saturday, just hours after the Amber alert was issued. The alert will stay in effect until the results of the autopsy are released. That could be as early as sometime on Monday.

The person who is believed to have been last seen with the woman and the young girl was the focus of that Amber alert, 33-year-old Marcus Hightower. He turned himself into police on Sunday. Investigators spent the day speaking with him about Savannah and her mother, Heidi, who family members say was last seen with Hightower last week.

We're told family members went to police in Livingston County on Tuesday of last week because they feared for Savannah and her mother, who had been dating Hightower. There had reportedly been some domestic violence issues in the past.

An Ambert alert was issued on Saturday when family members went back to talk to state troopers at the Michigan State Police post in Brighton when they still hadn't heard from their loved ones.

"Certainly there were indications early on that something more should have been done. It was not done," Detroit Police Chief James Craig has said.

Meanwhile, Hightower will stay in police custody until the autopsy results are known.
