Auburn Hills school lockdowns: Alleged teen stabbing incident sparks safety concerns

Multiple Metro Detroit schools were out on lockdown on Tuesday after an alleged stabbing during a fight between two teens.

What they're saying:

Students at Avondale High in Auburn Hills and the neighboring elementary school were both briefly put on lockdown. FOX 2 was told an apparent fight broke out between a 15-year-old and a 16-year-old student. Police say that was when the older teen allegedly pulled out a pocket knife around 7:45 a.m.

"Some people get shaken up by the, with the amount of school violence that has been around the nation. This is sensitive; and so people get upset quite easily with these kinds of things," said Dr. Jim Schwarz, the Superintendent of Avondale School District.

According to the Auburn Hills Deputy Chief, they found out about the incident roughly an hour after it happened because the injured student was picked up by a family member and then taken to a nearby hospital.

"It's tragic, school violence," said Deputy Chief Scott McGraw. "These arguments escalate very, very quickly. Obviously, the school does a very good job with keeping this school safe."

Cameras in the school captured the 16-year-old suspect slipping through a side door, which prompt a search of the area. An email was immediately sent out to parents.

"We were very transparent in getting out what we knew at the time when we knew it," said Schwarz. "You are always battling a lot of misinformation on social media and what people think happens. So you're battling a lot of that."

What's next:

FOX 2 was told the 15-year-old student who was allegedly stabbed is expected to be okay.

The suspect believed to be behind the incident was eventually found at his home and interviewed by police.

The lockdown was lifted as a result.

An investigation is ongoing.

"This is one of those isolated incidents that happened between two students, and hopefully we can get it resolved and make sure this doesn't happen again," McGraw said.
