Coney Island owner killed after being struck on Telegraph

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (WJBK) - A deadly crash happened on Telegraph Sunday when a 65-year-old man hit the back of another vehicle, killing one person and badly injuring another.

"He was just taken too soon, it's not fair," said Nusha Sylaj, the victim's daughter. 

Her father, Lazer Sylaj, was killed as he was driving his car Sunday morning at 12 Mile and Telegraph and his car was hit from behind by another vehicle. Nusha's sister, Marie, was also inside the vehicle but survived the crash.

Sylaj tried to talk through her tears about her father, but her pain is too much to bear.

"He was the best guy, he was my best friend," she said. "I was his favorite. He always called me daddy's little girl. It's going to be hard without him."

Nusha says her father was driving to the family business, Universal Coney Island in Detroit, when that tragic accident took place.

"He owns Universal Coney Island and has been in that business 35 years," Sylaj said. "Everybody knows him. All the customers love him, he is the best guy."

Police are still investigating the cause of the accident but say the driver who hit Sylaj did not brake prior to impact.  He was not injured during the accident and investigators say they are working to determine if any charges will be filed.

But for now Nusha, her mother and three siblings are preparing for a funeral and trying to find a way to say a goodbye that has come way too soon.

"He was a hard worker, he was the best dad, husband, friend, to everybody," she said. "He is just gone way too soon."
