Crash that killed 4 on I-94 is tragic reminder to slow down

Michigan State Police say a fatal crash that killed four on eastbound I-94 should serve as a warning about speeding in that area.

"This is an area we've been concerned about for a long, long time," said Lt. Michael Shaw, Michigan State Police.

State Police were at the scene of a tragic crash on I-94 at Eight Mile in Harper Woods after an SUV took the curve too fast.

The crash killed four people inside, but a 1-year-old child survived with only minor injuries.

"The car came past doing about 80," said John, a witness. "It flew past us and then he hit the wall and spun out of control."

John and his father stopped to help, but the driver, 20-year-old Dorii Rogers and her passenger, 20-year-old Alesia Maddox, were dead.

Alesia's son, Josiah, was safe in the backseat but her brother, 18-year-old Armonie Maddox and cousin 18-year-old Ervin Johnson, were ejected from the car and killed.

"That was the only thing that saved the baby was the car seat," John said. "It was shocking,"

"The child was the only one that survived and was the one that was actually buckled in," Shaw said.

The child, Josiah, just turned 1-year-old on Saturday

"It's a miracle," said a relative of the one of the victims. "God saved that baby
for a reason."

But no one could save the others who were going too fast and not wearing seatbelts. Their loved ones are heartbroken.

"They were good kids," said Londa Nixon, an aunt of one of the victims. "They weren't out here into things and being bad kids or anything like that - it's sad."

A tragic reminder for all drivers - to slow down.

"Something has to be done and we need the public's help as well," Shaw said. "Tickets aren't always the answer to this, slowing down is the answer and the only one to control that is the driver of the car."
