Derek's 30 Day Gallon-Of-Water-A-Day Challenge: Week 1

For those that don't know, I'm giving this "drink a gallon of water a day for 30 days" thing a shot. If you find yourself asking why, you aren't the only one.

A while back, I stumbled on an article about the benefits of drinking a gallon a day (it may have been this article, I honestly can't remember). Since then I wanted to give it a shot. For me it was mostly to have more energy and rely less on coffee. If my skin looks better that's a bonus.

I have been keeping a journal through the process so I can remember how I felt as I write these weekly articles. I won't bore you with the full transcript but here are some highlights.

Day 1: I was excited to get started and finished the gallon by 4PM.  I wrote, "easier than I thought".
Day 2: Played golf on a nice day so drinking water wasn't too tough.
Day 3: Finished gallon at 8PM and found it to be "more of an effort"
Day 4: Shot two stories for work and found it inconvenient to run to bathroom every 30 minutes.
Day 5: Did early morning news, which means I was awake from 2AM until 10PM that night.  Despite this, it is getting harder to finish the gallon.  Had to chug 16 oz before I went to sleep.
Day 6: Not waking up thirsty anymore
Day 7: Walking around Birmingham Art Festival proved to be tough.  Had to search out bathrooms nearby.

So there you go.  I'll be honest… so far, I haven't really felt any positive effects.  I have to use the bathroom a lot more than I used to, but I am still feeling groggy when I wake up and I still get tired at about 3-4PM. When this happens, I find myself still grabbing for a cup of coffee and not more water.

As I continue this for week 2 I'm going to look into what Carol said and see if there is anything I need to worry about. And let's hope I start feeling something other the need to pee!
