DETROIT (FOX 2) - A Detroit 4-year-old boy is lucky to be alive after finding an unsecured gun and shooting himself in the hand on Friday.
Capt. Mike Dicicco told FOX 2's Hilary Golston that they believe the 4-year-old boy got access to an unsecured gun and then shot himself in the hand.
What we know:
Dicicco said police were called to a home on Fullerton Street on Detroit's west side, just south of Davison near Dexter around 12:30 on Friday. He said the boy was taken to the hospital by police and is being treated for a minor to his hand.
When police searched the home, they said the child was there with his mother and another family member. That second family member was taken into custody due to an outstanding warrant.
Nobody else hurt inside the home but police said they found a couple of handguns in a bedroom of the home.
What we don't know:
Dicicco did not say what charges the parents of the child could face.

Michigan law requires that gun owners keep their guns unloaded and locked or stored when inside the home if a child is in the home.. The state offers free gun locks at MDHHS locations throughout the state.
