Heatwave hits metro Detroit; cooling centers open

(WJBK) - This weekend is going to be a summer scorcher with real feel temperatures expected to hit the triple digits on Saturday.

Ways to deal with it - try to stay in the shade and stay hydrated.  The Red Oaks Water Park in Madison Heights was a great place to stay cool and beat the heat Friday.

But an incredibly hot day for some is anything but enjoyable.  Dylan Lambert was sweating it out - delivering fruits and vegetables for Del Bene Produce.

"it's hot," he said. "They said it's going to be hotter tomorrow so I'm definitely taking a personal day tomorrow."

Construction workers in downtown Birmingham sweltering in the sun and taking frequent breaks. This extreme heat can be extremely dangerous.

"They can work 15, 20 minutes and take a little break," said Bill Stevenson of Angelo Iafrate Construction. "The machines are doing most of the work and the guys are just kind of guiding the machines today."

Meanwhile the city of Detroit has six cooling centers open throughout the weekend - places to get away from the heat and relax.

"The Williams Recreation Center as well as several other centers will be available," said Andrea Robinson. "This area right here is for cold water, reading magazines, watch TV, play board games. "
