MI Science Center honors teachers with event ft. workshops, STEM project demonstrations and more

(WJBK) - The Michigan Science Center hosted a Ford Fun Free Day on Saturday to honor teachers and celebrate going back to school.

The event featured free health immunizations, Detroit Public Schools Community District open enrollment and teachers were able to participate in a free professional development workshop.

Located in Detroit, the Michigan Science Center, or MiSci, aims to make science, technology, engineering and math, or STEM, accessible to everyone.

"We have over 250 exhibits and so we've seen a lot of people come out. You see kids having a great time being able to put their hands on everything and get involved," said Lisa Reynolds, vice president of marketing.

Event officials said between 3,200 and 3,500 people attended.

"I basically came to support the science center, learn things, come for school supplies so I can be ready, and register for school," said 12-year-old Jayla Green.

During the professional workshop, teachers were shown how to use MiSci programs with their current curriculum and test preparation materials. The museum also demonstrated engaging activities involving STEM that  teachers can use in their own classrooms.

The event was sponsored by Ford Motor Company and Meridian Health Plan.

"I'm having so much fun," said 10-year-old Dwayne Weathington.

The next Ford Fun Free Day will be held in honor of Veterans Day and will take place on November 11.
