Michigan family's rare identical triplet with liver cancer faces yet another fight

Baby Josephine and her identical triplet sisters, Konstantina and Valkyrie, are rare in their own right. But for 10-month-old JoJo, she'd had fight of her own: liver cancer. And it was complicated by a respiratory virus.

Mom Stacy Wells and her family introduced us to their incredibly rare triplets at University of Michigan Health C-S Mott Children’s Hospital in December.

Baby JoJo and Wells spent several weeks at the hospital after Wells found an odd growth in her abdomen.

The backstory:

"JoJo is currently fighting high risk metastatic catablastoma which is a liver cancer," Wells said. "Right now, JoJo is finishing up second round of chemo. She's been in hospital more than anticipated."

But her time in the hospital got worse.

"Some complications with respiratory virus she requires some oxygen support lot of suctioning of mucus," Wells said.

The treatments kept JoJo away from her six siblings – including her identical sisters.

"(She) definitely misses her triplet sisters, Konstantina and Valkyrie, when she is at the hospital and really all of the kids," Wells said.

As JoJo's medical care keeps the baby in the hospital, it's also meant Wells hasn't been able to work.

"I’m Still on leave of absence and still trying to figure out what the future is going to look like," Wells said.

What you can do:

JoJo's first birthday is in March and doctors are considering a surgical procedure which would involve more hospital stays.

As the family awaits the next steps, they're asking for anyone who can help to donate to their GoFundMe.

"JoJo needs will be ongoing for the next six months. We’re looking for help that will make a significant impact," Wells said.

What's next:

Baby JoJo is expected to leave the hospital on Thursday and it's a reunion that will bring the triplets back together again.

"The last time I brought JoJo home to her sisters she reached out towards them and started making noises so I know she was excited to see them," Wells said.
