The body of a missing swimmer has been recovered in the St. Clair River.

The man, Darren Cogbill, had gone missing in Algonac since Monday afternoon. At 7 p.m. Tuesday, members of the sheriff's office dive team recovered the 37-year-old man's body, according to St. Clair County Sheriff Tim Donnellon.

The first call first came in around 5:30 Monday afternoon of a swimmer missing in the North Channel of the St. Clair River outside the Algonac Harbour Boat Club.

Cogbill and three others had jumped from a boat into the  river.  According to witnesses, Cogbill surfaced once, then went under and was unable to be located by the others.  Firefighters from the Algonac, Clay Township and Ira Township Fire Departments responded first, then turned the incident over to the Dive Team.  A search for Cogbill continued until just before dark Monday night.

At 9 a.m. this morning, members of the dive team in a boat equipped with a sonar buoy that is pulled behind the boat began sweeping the St. Clair River.

The search continued until Cogbill's body was located by sonar in about 45 feet of water not too far from the entrance of the boat club, in the North Channel.  Once the sonar discovered the location, divers went into the water.  With visibility at about 10 feet, it took some time to locate, then remove the body from the water.

Cogbill's body was identified by his mother and a family friend who were waiting near the location where the body was found.

A Sheriff's Office Detective conducted an investigation at the scene.  At this time, foul play is not suspected.

Cogbill's body has been removed by the St. Clair County Medical Examiner's Office to McLaren Port Huron Hospital, where an autopsy will be conducted.
