Preventative car maintenance in sub zero temperatures

As the temperatures continue to plummet during the polar vortex of 2019, In Utica, Jerry Reygaert of Rey’s Auto and Tire is seeing problems.

“We're starting to see coolant failures where people are not getting heat, in this truck here we got a battery failure,” Reygaert said.

Another big issue when it’s cold is low tire pressure.

“For every x amount of temperature your Losing 3 lbs. per five degrees so, check tire pressures, make sure you keep them up to what it says on the side of the door when you open it up,” Raygaert said.

Jerry recommends getting your car battery checked at least once a year and replacing it every four to five years.

“Make sure your coolant checked properly, should be serviced every 3 -5 years depending on the car,” he said.

And don’t forget to make sure your windshield wiper fluid is topped off, Jerry says it’s crucial you buy the right kind of fluid.

When you're purchasing windshield wiper fluid make sure it says -20 below Fahrenheit not 25 below freezing,” he said.

Jerry says getting the 25 below freezing will freeze up on your windshield then you won’t be able to see.

Doing just those few things can make a big difference.

“I can’t preach it enough, maintenance preventative maintenance goes miles,” he said.
