Primary Election Day Tuesday, Aug. 2

Many issues across the board in metro Detroit will be on the ballots this August primary, which is Tuesday, August 2.

You can see what will be on your ballot here.

Statewide voter turnout for the primary is likely to be low. There are no gubernatorial or U.S. Senate candidates on the ballot for the first time in a dozen years.

Forty-two of the 110 seats in the Michigan House are opening because of term limits, a departure and the recent death of a lawmaker. Because of gerrymandered districts, some primary voters will essentially elect their next representative on Aug. 2. Results in swing districts will be closely monitored, because some winners will be seen as bettering or worsening the parties' chances in November. House Republicans, who took control in 2011, currently have a 63-45 edge.

One of the big issues here in the metro area is the Detroit Zoo millage, which is a renewal for 10 years that brings $11 million a year from people in Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties. You can learn more about the millage by watching the report in the video player above from FOX 2's Robin Murdoch.

Other races to keep an eye on are the seats of former state representatives Virgil Smith and the late Julie Plawecki.

Virgil Smith resigned after he was sentenced to 10 months in jail for shooting at his ex-wife's car. A special election for Smith's old seat will be held in November. The winner of that election will finish the remaining two years of Smith's term.

Voters in Michigan's 11th District will decide who will take over Julie Plawecki's position. Plawecki died in June after suffering a heart attack while hiking in Oregon.

The polls opened Tuesday at 7 a.m. and will close at 8 p.m.

The Detroit branch of the NAACP has a voter hotline set up, to answer any election questions. You can call them at (313) 664-2424 until 8 p.m.
