State gives Darnell Earley $83K in compensation after resignation

Darnell Earley walked away from his position at Detroit Public Schools with a lot of questions -- and a hefty paycheck.

The former emergency manager abruptly resigned last month, which was four months earlier than expected. As part of his deal, the state cut him a check for about $83,000.

In January of last year, Earley became the district's fourth emergency manager with a$ 225,000 annual contract. He's faced heavy criticism as he leaves the district with a huge deficit -- and crumbling school buildings.

He's also been criticized for being the City of Flint's emergency manager in 2014 when the city switched water sources, which lead to the water crisis.
