Testimony: Man accused of killing DPD officer Myron Jarrett smoked crack in crash

DETROIT (WJBK) - Steve Guzina is charged with hitting and killing Detroit Police Corporal Myron Jarrett in October. Guzina then left the scene, police said.

Guzina was allegedly was smoking crack cocaine at the time - and is accused of smoking it during the crash. After the crash, police say he fled the scene on foot before being arrested the next morning.

"I took a man's life, nothing could bring him back, and in nothing would ever make me feel better as long as God keeps me on this earth," he said.

The family has filed a $15 million wrongful death suit against Cuzina.

Jarrett was an eight-year veteran with the force, assigned to the 12th precinct on the city's west side. Jarrett was also a father of four children and Detroit Police Chief James Craig said his role in the community will be missed. 

"He was an outstanding officer," Craig said. "Everyone I've talked to from his family, his wife, great father, to the officers a great mentor, a friend certainly to the community. This is someone who deeply cared not only for the work and the difference he was making - but the community loved him."

His death was the second of three police officers in a span of 45 days. He was promoted to Corporal after his death.
