Three headstones found in small Brighton lake

BRIGHTON, Mich. (WJBK) - A private lake in Brighton seems to hold a lot of mysteries, especially surrounding these three headstones. Now the search is on to find out who they belong to and how they got there.

As lakes go, Brigg's Lake is quiet by design with no motors allowed but that doesn't mean there isn't a share of treasure to be found. Most of them found with a rod and some bait.

But two weeks ago a fisherman made an unlikely and unexplained find.

"When Bob came by he knew they were gravestones," said Ron Witherspoon. "That's when a can of worms opened up."

Three gravemarkers spanning generations - Marya Jaroch born in 1882 and died 1905.  Kasper Pujdowski 1875 to 1922  and Edward Galka born 1918 and died in 1980.
 
Galka served in the U.S. Coast Guard and fought in World War II accroding to his headstone. Online records indicate that he likely lived in Warren at the time of his death. 

One thing seems certain in the mind of Witherspoon - this was not his intended resting place.

"These need to be on graves," he said. "That means there are bodies buried somewhere underneath something."

For the past year and a half Ron Witherspoon has lived feet away from the find.  He claims he has never seen these headstones before and he's not sure how long they have been in their current position. 

The mystery continues feet away on land, as another grave appears intact.

"She was born March 28th 1928 and died January 21st 1929," Witherspoon said. "And underneath it says 'Dear baby.'" 
 
Whatever links these stones have together is a mystery that Witherspoon intends on investigating - creating a little noise on an otherwise quiet lake.
