UAW workers vote to approve Fiat Chrysler deal

(WJBK) - United Auto Workers workers have voted to approve the Fiat Chrysler deal. The UAW announced on social media Thursday morning that the agreement was ratified by a 77 percent majority.

"The recent bargaining process that took place on behalf of our members at FCA is a testament to the UAW's democratic velues and commitment to our members. The resolve of our membership and the dedication of our negotiating team has produced an agreement that affords UAW members a strong wage package and job security while still allowing the company to competitively produce high quality vehicles for our customers," UAW President Dennis Williams said.

It's the second time in a month that Fiat Chrysler's 40,000 union members voted on a contract. A previous deal was soundly rejected largely because it didn't eliminate a much-hated two-tiered pay system.

Voting for this four-year pact ended Wednesday night.

The new agreement gives raises to all workers and eliminates the two tiers over eight years.

The union will use the Fiat Chrysler deal as a template for talks with Ford and General Motors. But President Dennis Williams says Ford and GM make more money and should be able to pay more.
