Victim of wrong-way driver crash has long road to recovery, desperate for help
DETROIT (FOX 2) - Kayla King is one of several victims of a wrong-way driver.
"I'm grateful to be alive, but I just can't even believe what's going on right now," said Kayla King. "I can't believe that I can't walk right now."
Big picture view:
The moment that changed her life took place on westbound I-96 near MLK Boulevard around 3:15 a.m. last Sunday.
King, her sisters and girlfriends, enjoyed a night at the casino and were on their way home. Then their SUV carrying seven people, was hit head-on.
"The only thing I can really remember is, me waking up in so much pain and screaming," she said.
Kayla suffered internal bleeding in the crash. When she woke up - she had stiches across her abdomen, rods in her knees, and a broken foot.
As a hairdresser, she can't work - until she heals.
"Like how am I going to do hair, I can't do hair like this," she said. "Like, my leg is gone."
King is a single mother to a 4-year-old girl.
"Just knowing that I can't really do what I usually do for my baby, it kind of breaks my heart," she said.
To help her get by during this challenging time -- King has started a GoFundMe (see link below).
"I'm not the type of person to ask for help," she said. "I will literally keep everything bottled up, before I ask anybody to help me with anything. But this is a situation that is literally out of my hands.
"Its not even just about the money, I want people to keep praying for me and stuff like that, because that can help as well."
The wrong-way driver was killed in the crash. That person's identity has not been released.
The other six people were hospitalized -- including two of King's sisters -- who also can't walk from their injuries.
"The girl who did drive home, my condolences go out to her and her family," she said. "However even though she almost took my life, I still forgive her.
"This accident could have killed us -- but God had other plans for us."
