They are back.

It is the smelly, slimy sign that summer is almost here - fish flies.

Eastsiders say they aren't too bad, but for most of us they are disgusting. But it turns out, they are actually a good thing.

It is fish fly season along Lake St. Clair in St. Clair Shores. They last from mid-June to late July sticking from everything from walls to streetlights to you.

Birds and fish feed on them but for us, they are gross. Power washing them off is one way to be rid of them but even if they are dead, it creates a dead fish stench.

The positive to the fish flies is that the more you see, it is a good indication that the waterways are healthy and it provides a good ecosystem.
