Metro Detroit weather: Extreme cold persists with double-digit negative wind chills
DETROIT (FOX 2) - Bone-chilling cold grips Metro Detroit today as dangerously low temperatures make their mark.
This morning started with actual temperatures near 0 degrees, but it felt even worse—wind chills dipped to a frosty -12. Don’t expect much warmth as the day wears on. Highs will struggle to reach just 6 degrees, and even then, it’ll feel closer to -9 thanks to those persistent winds. A few light snow flurries might dance in the air, but the real story is the bitter cold.
A Cold Weather Advisory is in effect for Monroe County, Livingston County, Lapeer County, St. Clair County, Wayne County, Macomb County, Washtenaw County, and Oakland County until noon Wednesday.

A cold weather advisory remains in effect through Wednesday afternoon, and for good reason. Tonight, temperatures will plummet even further, with lows near -4. Factor in the wind, and it will feel like -20. It’s no surprise that schools across the region are staying closed through Wednesday—it’s simply too dangerous to be outside for extended periods.

Wednesday morning will bring the worst of this Arctic stretch, but a slight "warm-up" is on the way. By Wednesday afternoon, temperatures climb to about 16 degrees, though wind chills will still hover around 4. It’s better, but far from pleasant.

Looking ahead, Thursday offers some relief. Highs return to a more manageable 25 degrees, though snow will make a return. Expect about an inch or less of accumulation—nothing major, but enough to dust the roads.

By the weekend, Metro Detroit will finally emerge from the deep freeze. Highs in the 30s will feel almost tropical compared to this week’s brutal start. It’s a welcome shift after days of relentless cold.
The message is clear: bundle up, limit your time outside, and stay safe. This kind of extreme cold can be dangerous if you’re not prepared. Warmer days are coming, but for now, winter’s icy grip is holding tight.
