Young Author Sparks Literacy Programs in Detroit

School is out for the summer, but the battle against illiteracy never takes a break. Particularly in cities like Detroit where students, on average, consistently score below the norm when tested on reading and writing.

Kyle Prue is working to change that. The 19-year-old from Florida deferred his first year at the University of Michigan so he could finish his trilogy of young adult fantasy novels. While promoting his first book on a nationwide tour, the award-winning author discovered that he could inspire middle and high school students to read, write and reach their dreams.

Prue founded Sparking Literacy, a non-profit geared toward equipping underprivileged children with books and the ability to read them. He dropped by the Fox2 studios to preview an upcoming event and discuss his goals for the organization.
