17-year-old victim of sexual assault dies, Detroit police say

Detroit police confirmed to FOX 2 on Tuesday that the 17-year-old victim of a sexual assault on the city's east side has died.

The 17-year-old victim was attacked last week inside her home. She was found by her brother in the back room of the family's home as she was getting ready for school around 6:00 a.m.

Michael Hughes told FOX 2's Josh Landon last Thursday that her vital signs were good. On Tuesday, police say the victim died from her injuries.

Police said the man who attacked her was carrying a kitchen knife during the attack.

On Friday, they released a picture of the man they said is responsible: Darian Winfield. He was arrested in front of his home the same day.

Police say the sexual assaults began in the second week of December and they've been happening between midnight and 5:00 a.m. They say they've connected at least two more cases to the suspect.

Family have released the name of the victim on their GoFundMe page.
