80-year-old vet attacked working in his St. Clair Shores yard

An elderly man was attacked and robbed working his yard in broad daylight.

"I didn't get scared, I know he wanted money and I didn't have any," Harold  Mackey said. 

It takes a lot to rattle Mackey, an 80-year-old Korean War veteran, but what happened Thursday morning in St. Clair Shores has many upset.

"It is extremely frustrating," said Det. Sgt. Jay Cohoe. "You have a gentlemen out doing his yard work, minding his own business. He's lived the community a number of years and all of a sudden some coward comes up."  
 
It took place in the 28000 block of Larchmont just before nine in the morning. Harold suffered a broken rib after the suspect came up behind him and attacked.

"My back hurt yesterday," Mackey said. "Real bad. Where I got punched."

After the suspect robbed Harold, he ran to nearby Grant street where he had a Sport Utility Vehicle waiting. 

A witness in right place at the right time followed him to Roseville but lost him. She was able to get a good description of the suspect and his getaway car.
 
"Our witness was following him," Cohoe said. "He was doing everything he could to get away and bounced off a couple of curbs in Roseville. According to the tree crew, it might have caused some type of damage where it affected his ability to steer."
 
The vehicle is described as a 2005 to 2009 gray GMC Envoy four-door or possibly a Denali with chrome rims. It could have damage to the tires. 

The suspect is a black man about 20 to 25 years old. He's about 5-feet-10 to 6 feet tall and weighs 200 to 220 pounds. He was last seen wearing a plaid shirt.

" I look at it now I'm glad I didn't get stabbed or shot," Mackey said.
 
Now all police want to do is to find this guy. They say if he could do this to an 80-year-old father of five, grandfather to nine and great-grandfather to two, he could do this to anyone and needs to be stopped.

"Everyone in the department is ticked off and is taking this personally," Cohoe said.
