Commute time shorter in Detroit than national average

The average commute time is shorter in Metro Detroit than the national average, one study shows.

According to Trulia.com, it takes about 27 minutes on average for Americans to get to their place of work. In Metro Detroit, the average is 24 minutes.

The average nationwide commute has risen a full minute in the last seven years.

The area with the longest commute is New York City, where workers spend 35 minutes en route to work. Buffalo workers have the shortest average commute among large cities at 20 minutes.
