Detroit mother faces gun charges after alleged incident at Brewer Academy

Officials say a mother-pistol whipped a 15 and 16 year old-then fired a gun in front of a school in Detroit.

The mother says she was attacked, but is now facing gun charges which could land her in prison.

What they're saying:

Brewer Academy on Detroit's east side and part of Detroit Public Schools, is where students from pre-kindergarten to eighth grade attend. But on Wednesday, students and staff heard gunshots ring out outside their school.

Josh, who lives near Brewer, was outside his home around 4 p.m. when school was getting out.

"I was standing by the garage, and then I heard all the kids screaming and running around and someone said there was a shooting, I thought it was fireworks," he said.

The alleged shooter was Jasmine Parker Malloy from Detroit, who was arrested, and the gun was later found at her house.

Dig deeper:

According to her attorney, she was at the school to request a meeting about her second grade student who was being bullied.

She says she was attacked by a 15 and 16-year-old.

"My client was not up there trying to start trouble. Not trying to pistol anybody, and that’s not what happened," said attorney Phil Ragan.

Meanwhile, the principal of Brewer Academy says there are better ways to solve problems without bringing a gun onto the scene.

"Yeah we’re talking. We talk. Conversation, collaborative conversation is always the best way," said Marty Bulger. "And compassion, caring. Getting creative."

What's next:

There were no injuries and, because Parker Malloy has no criminal record, the judge gave her a $100,000 personal bond.

Her next court date will be on Feb.19.
