Detroit police officer shot at by carjacking suspect but is uninjured

Detroit police say it started when officers on routine patrol, heard gunshots, and jumped into action.

A carjacking suspect shot at a Detroit police officer during a foot chase Thursday night, but no officers were injured. Two suspects have been arrested with one still at large.

One suspect was being chased on foot when he shot at the officer chasing him, then dropped his weapon near McNichols and Burwood. The remaining suspect at large, stole a 2010 silver Ford Flex with the plate number BVM 574.

Detroit Police Chief James White said the officer somehow wasn't hit.

"Oh it was point blank. He turned as he was chasing him and shot at him," White said. "We’re very fortunate. He’s blessed to be here upright talking and ok and ready to go back to work. It’s incredible the commitment that our officers have to serving this community."

The incident began at about 5:45 p.m. when officers traveling wb on Six Mile heard gunshots, pulled over a car they thought had been shooting, but discovered it was actually the intended target. Police then turned around and pursued the gunman's vehicle which had two other suspects inside.

The suspects fled, but crashed into another car, when at that point the occupants fled. Two were eventually caught. The third, who was armed, fired at the officer while being chased, then climbed through a fence.

The suspect at large, approached a woman with her three children coming home, and asked to hide out in the house.

"Of course she says no, and goes into her home. That suspect takes her vehicle and flees," White said.

Michigan State Police used the helicopter Trooper 3, as well as a canine unit to assist DPD in the search.

White praised the bravery of the citizen who refused to help the suspect and thanked Michigan State Police for assistance in the operation.

It is the second incident where an officer was shot at Thursday night. In a different case, suspects in a speeding Dodge Ram truck opened fire on a scout car pursuing them. At the end of the chase, the three suspects were arrested at the Dearborn-Allen Park border.
