Dozens of Detroit schools close in planned sick out Wednesday

Numerous Detroit Public Schools are closed Wednesday due to a planned sick out.

Teachers are staging another sick out in protest of the current infrastructure conditions of schools as well as pay, benefits and what is deemed interference at the state level.

FOX 2 will include more names if necessary, as they become available.

A statement from DPS said: "Due to a high volume of teacher absences, the following schools will be closed on Wednesday, January 20, 2016. DPS has no other option but to close schools when teachers do not report for work."

A rally and picket is planned outside the Hilton Garden Inn at 351 Gratiot, in support of former union president Steve Conn, in his appeal hearing before the American Federation of Teachers National Executive Council.

Detroit Public Schools are about $500 million in debt and have payments scheduled to begin soon to start paying it down.

Sick outs are also reaction to Snyder's plan to overhaul the school district. It's been under state control since 2009 but he recently proposed a new plan to pay off millions in debt but would split the district into the 'old district' and the 'new district'.
