Former Detroit Lion Mel Farr dies at 70

Retired Detroit Lion Mel Farr has died at 70.

He died suddenly at his home Monday night according to a friend of the family.

Farr played running back for the Lions from 1967 to 1973 and was a two-time Pro Bowl selection. 

He later became well known for his "Mel Farr Superstar" car commercials where he flew with a cape. His long-time dealership was at 10 Mile and Greenfield.

His son Mike Farr, played briefly for the Lions at receiver in the early 90s.

It is second cornerstone of the Lions franchise to die in recent months, following the passing of Hall of Fame tight end Charlie Sanders. Sanders died on July 2.

Farr was drafted in the first round of the 1967 draft and was the offensive rookie of the year.
