I-75 traffic shifting to SB lanes today in modernization project
(FOX 2) - Another big traffic shift is coming to metro Detroit.
All I-75 traffic is moving to the southbound lanes today, between Coolidge Highway and 13 Mile Road. By evening rush hour on Wednesday, all I-75 traffic will be on the southbound side of the freeway, with two lanes open in each direction. The traffic shift will allow for the northbound lanes to be reconstructed this year.
The configuration will close entrance ramps from Big Beaver and Rochester roads to SB I-75, along with the exit to eastbound 14 Mile Road, for safety purposes.
Temporary exits will be maintained for northbound traffic at 14 Mile Road, Rochester Road, Big Beaver Road, and Crooks Road/Corporate Drive. A crossover at the Crooks Road/Corporate Drive entrance ramp will allow traffic to access northbound I-75 while traffic is shifted onto the southbound side.
The plan is part of the 18-mile modernization project that will bring the freeway to current standards and add a carpool (HOV) lane in each direction.
Segment 2 is a $224 million project that involves reconstructin 8 miles of pavement, improving 18 structures, upgrading drainage, constructing community-developed aesthetics and federally approved noise walls, and the building of the HOV lane between Coolidge and 13 Mile.
The massive project was originally expected to take until 2034 - 18 years - but earlier this month, MDOT said it moved the completion date up to 2023. Project details are posted online at www.modernize75.com.
