Livonia officer stabbed by knife-wielding suspect who entered lobby making threats

A Livonia police officer is in stable condition after being stabbed by a suspect during a struggle in the front lobby of the department Friday morning.

The suspect was involved in an assault case earlier in the morning before traveling to the Livonia police station and threatening to harm others at the department.

What we know:

Just after 9 a.m. on April 3, an individual walked into the front lobby of the Livonia Police Department headquarters waving a knife and saying he wanted to kill everyone there.

Officers at the front desk made contact with him before a taser was deployed multiple times.

The suspect was taken down and a struggle ensued. During the grappling, an officer was stabbed in the leg.

During the struggle, the suspect kicked an officer, which caused the service weapon to fire. No one was hit by the shot.

Police said a single round was fired from a gun, after an officer was kicked in the leg, but no one was struck.

Dig deeper:

Earlier in the day, the suspect had been involved in a felonious assault in Westland. They then drove to the police department and began making threats.

The male suspect is in custody.  The officer who was injured was taken to the hospital and is in stable condition.

What we don't know:

In the initial assault the suspect was armed with a shotgun and was threatening a delivery driver on Sanford Drive in Westland, police said.

Investigators say afterward the suspect drove to the Livonia police station and that mental health could have played a factor in the incident.
