Marco Rubio visits Macomb County on eve of GOP debate
Michigan is center stage in the race for the white house. Both the Republicans and Democrats are holding debates here in the next few days with the state's Primary on Tuesday.
Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Florida) was in Macomb County Wednesday night, greeted by chanting and cheers at a pre-debate rally in Macomb County and wasted no time blasting his biggest rival, Donald Trump.
"Usually when you are the front runner everyone is saying please get out of the race so we can unify around the front runner," Rubio said. "What people are saying now is please, everyone get together so we can keep this front runner from winning and destroying the Republican Party."
Rubio is desperately fighting to win back support after only taking Minnesota on Super Tuesday.
While touted his presidential plans which included protecting the First and Second Amendment, fighting the war on terror, creating more manufacturing jobs and assisting veterans.
"On my first day in office you can count on this," he said. "I will immediately repeal every one of Barack Obama's unconstitutional executive orders."
Most of his comments circled back to his competition.
"If we choose Donald Trump as our nominee he would have carried out the most elaborate con job in the history of American politics," Rubio said. "We can't lose this election to a socialist like Bernie Sanders, we can't lose to Hillary Clinton who by the way is unqualified, she is disqualified."
The crowd of a couple hundred people included a mix of those who back the young senator to several undecided voters looking for a solid candidate to support, like Nicole Roberts, who brought her family to the Rubio rally.
"The Second Amendment about our children's future, a lot of things of course," Roberts said. "A lot of us are not happy with Donald Trump."
"I think he should have talked more about the issues rather than putting down Trump and the mudslinging," said Phil Gagnon of Shelby Township.
"It is my first election and I'm super-psyched," said Sydney Carr. "I can see myself relating more toward Rubio's views."
"I just like his plan for the future of America," said Valerie Sandovall. "I have a son who is going to be 14, I am concerned about the future of our country, national security, the way the world is these days. I think he would do a great job."
We'll hear from Rubio next at Thursday's big GOP debate at the Fox Theatre in Detroit. Rubio is hoping Michigan will be on his side. We'll find out on March 8th.
