Outdoor Dogs: Do they make good guards?

There are many different reasons people keep their dogs outside in the backyard. Sometimes, they're kept outside as guard dogs. The Michigan Humane Society is here to tell us why that's not as protective as you might think.

MHS always recommends that dogs live indoors with the rest of the family. Especially during severe cold weather.

Some outdoor dogs are kept outside for protection. However, if you are looking to protect your home and family, your best bet is to bring the dogs inside.

A dog chained up in the backyard makes a lousy guard dog. A dog will become naturally protective of where he lives, and if he is never allowed in the house, it will not become a place to protect.

Inside your dog can help protect you, alert you and help deter people from entering without your welcome. But if there is a behavior reason for keeping your pet outside, please call us. We would be happy to direct you to helpful resources.
