River Rouge school fight leaves student hospitalized: Mother looking for answers

A fight between middle schoolers at Sabbath Middle School left one student hospitalized and an angry mother asking questions.

The backstory:

The fight was captured on video, showing 13-year-old Eymare Files getting slammed to the ground. Evelyn Dixon is Eymare’s mom, who says the fight left her child with a swollen face and neck and unconscious.

"He told me he was on the floor for about 12 seconds. Nobody helped him up, he couldn’t move. So I was very angry about that. Nobody from the school contacted me," she said.

The fight took place on Jan. 31, and she says her son is recovering but in a lot of pain. Evelyn says she can't believe the middle school in River Rouge didn't call her immediately. She found out about Eymare’s injuries hours later when her oldest son sent her that video.

"It was like at the end of the school day," she said. "I immediately called, spoke to some lady at the office, and she informed me that Eymare looked fine. They had put him on the bus to send him home."

From the bus stop she drove her son to the hospital—she says he had a minor concussion.

"I want to know why they didn’t call me. The principal stated that he was very busy, they were understaffed, that he didn’t see the fight in the gym," she said. "But somebody should’ve called me no matter what."

The principal of Sabbath Middle School told FOX 2 he spent more than an hour with Eymare right after the incident happened to make sure he was okay.

What they're saying:

He sent a statement:

"Our actions are always guided by the best interests of our students. We have followed all proper protocols while addressing each student’s individual needs. Given our strong relationship and extensive support for this student, we are deeply surprised by this situation. We hope to work closely with the family to address the issue and continue supporting the student’s growth."

Evelyn says she’s pulled her son out of school and will be looking for a new place to enroll.
