Shelby Township Coney Island patrons restrain attempted robbery suspect

Employees and restaurant patrons restrained a man who was attempting to rob a Shelby Township Coney Island restaurant Sunday morning.

Police responded to the National Coney Island near 23 Mile Road and Schoenherr Road at 9:16 a.m. Sunday. Officers were informed that a man told the cashier that he had a gun and demanded money from the register.

Employees and patrons of the restaurant physically restrained the man as he attempted to leave.

Officer took the suspect into custody and recovered a large knife.  The suspect did not actually have a gun.

The 23-year-old Shelby Township resident is well known to the police.  His name is not being released until after his arraignment, which is scheduled for Monday at 1:30 p.m. in the 41-A district court.
