Special delivery: Westland police deliver baby in car

A Westland police officer came in the nick of time for a special delivery on Oct. 8.

A Dearborn man had called  911 to say his wife was going into labor at 9:30 p.m. saying that they were not going to be able to make it to the hospital, police said.

The dispatcher directed him to the police station and by the time Sgt. Robert Kenyon met the vehicle in the parking lot, the baby's head was visible.

Kenyon then held onto the baby as it was delivered and checked to make sure the umbilical cord was not wrapped around the newborn's neck, and noticed that the baby started to cry.

The Fire Department arrived a short time later to convey the mother and the baby boy, who were both in good health, to a nearby hospital.

Baby Haydon and his parents, Ralph and Constance Laderoot, were all doing great afterwards, said Deputy Chief Brian Miller.
