Stolen safe with GPS tracker leads to Sterling Heights police chase

STERLING HEIGHTS, Mich. (WJBK) - A safe with a GPS tracker stolen from a pharmacy in Sterling Height led to a police chase that ended with a recovered safe -- but not a recovered suspect.

Police say around 4:30 a.m. Sunday, officers responded to a breaking and entering alarm at Sunshine Pharmacy in Sterling Heights. At the same time, they were advised that Clinton Township police were dealing with a breaking and entering in the same area.

Officials say a safe had been stolen and the alarm company alerted police that the safe had a GPS tracker, relaying the location information to police.

Officers found a black GMC pick-up truck without a license plate traveling southbound on Schoenherr at Clinton River Road with a large safe in the rear bed. Once the pursuit began, the safe well out of the truck and onto the road where it was recovered by police.

Sterling Heights police continued to chase the suspects until the pursuit was terminated. Police say they later found the vehicle in the area of Rossiter and Morang in Detroit unoccupied but still running. The ignition was damaged, and officials discovered the vehicle was stolen from Detroit.

Officers were able to recover evidence from the Sterling Heights breaking and entering, as well as possible evidence of similar crimes in cities nearby.
