A pet health company has issued a nationwide recall of several canine milk replacer products after discovering inconsistent levels of Vitamin D that could pose serious health risks to dogs.

Revival Animal Health announced the recall of its Breeder’s Edge Foster Care Canine and Shelter’s Choice Canine Milk Replacers following an internal investigation.

Big picture view:

The Iowa-based company found that some of the canine milk replacers contained either too little or excessively high levels of Vitamin D, a nutrient that can be harmful in large quantities.

The products are milk replacers for puppies to support healthy growth and development, according to product descriptions.

So far, two cases of rickets – a condition linked to insufficient Vitamin D – have been reported in connection with the products. This reflects the variability in nutrient levels identified during the investigation.

The recall was initiated after an investigation determined that the product had variable levels of Vitamin D, resulting in both low and elevated levels in some of the canine milk replacers.

Dogs that have consumed high levels of Vitamin D may show symptoms including vomiting, loss of appetite, increased thirst and urination, excessive drooling and weight loss. In severe cases, Vitamin D toxicity can lead to renal dysfunction and other serious complications.

Consumers whose pets have consumed the affected products and are displaying symptoms are advised to contact a veterinarian. Those who have purchased the recalled items can return them to the company for a full refund.
