According to the initial report, one reason for the undercount-- is because of misspellings of the words "Covid" and "coronavirus" on death certificates.

The health department reported 101 new COVID-19 outbreaks at schools last week, adding to the 319 ongoing outbreaks already being tracked.

Beaumont said in a statement: "We hope that those 370 employees will choose to get vaccinated and return to work soon. If they choose to not meet our vaccine requirements by November 16th, their employment will be terminated."

Courtney Davis said it's been an honor to work for the department for nearly five years. "However, with the politicization of public health during the pandemic, I can no longer effectively do my job and serve the community with its health and safety always at the forefront," she said.

On Thursday, Michigan's largest hospital chain announced 370 workers - about 1% of its staff - were suspended from the job until they met the hospital's vaccine requirements.

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer said the state's vaccine and testing rules would be as strict as those deployed by the Biden administration, after questions from the business community this week.

Spokesman Mark Geary says Beaumont hopes they decide to get the vaccine and return to work. An additional 70 employees resigned. At Henry Ford Health System, 400 refused to get the vaccine by an October deadline and lost their jobs.
