Palmer Park Bandshell re-opens in Detroit
The bandshell originally opened at the Historic Michigan State Fairgrounds in 1938 and closed in 2008 when the State of Michigan closed the State Fair. In 2020, the property was sold to Amazon for a new distribution center that employs nearly 4,000 people. There was strong community support for saving the bandshell including 60,000 petition signatures gathered by the State Fair Development Coalition. Since the development encompassed the historic bandshell site, the City of Detroit agreed to move the bandshell to Palmer Park in District 2, following an extensive restoration process.
