25-year-old shot and killed while walking to store with friend

DETROIT (WJBK) - Detroit Police are investigating a fatal shooting that happened early Tuesday morning on Detroit's east side. 

A 25-year-old man was shot and killed as he was walking home from the store with a friend. 

Police say the two were walking around 6 a.m. in the area of Chester Street and University Place, which is near Cadieux Road and Harper Avenue. That's when police say a gray box Jeep pulled up and shot at them. They ran away, trying to stay safe. 

One of them was hit, though, and eventually collapsed down the street. 

"The victim actually fell in between one of the houses right down through here. It appeared he tried to clear a couple fences, and then eventually just fell," says Detroit Police Capt. Melissa Gardner. 

We're told the friend went up and down the street, knocking on doors, trying to get help.

"I'm just in shock. I thought they were going door to door, knocking because they were trying to break into somebody's house. But I didn't know someone had got shot, though (sic)," says neighbor Serina Shelton.

It appears the friend wasn't hit. Police are still in the process of questioning him right now. It's not known why the two were shot at. 

Family at the scene identified the victim to us as Dalvin Borden. They didn't want to speak on camera, but told us Borden leaves behind two children and that he was a good family man. 

Police haven't given a description of the suspect or suspects at this time.
