Duggan: Aretha Franklin's 'Respect' was an anthem of Detroit

DETROIT (WJBK) - Her music resonates across generations and no where more than right here in Motown. Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan spoke Thursday about how much Aretha Franklin meant to the city.

"Aretha Franklin was a daughter of Detroit," Duggan said. "I always thought R-E-S-P-E-C-T was an anthem of Detroit."  

The mayor reflected on the iconic singer hours after the world learned of her passing.

"She started her life here. She suffered great tragedy here, particularly with the murder of her father. She enjoyed great success here and she finished her life here," Duggan said.

Duggan pointed out a picture of Aretha that is prominently displayed  in his lobby. He says a highlight of his career was presenting something very special to the Queen of Soul.

"One of the greatest joys of my time as mayor was June of last year when I got to award Aretha Franklin the key to the city, which is something we do rarely  and only to people of extraordinary accomplishment and character," he said.

City officials say there will be a number of events planned to honor the legendary singer.

"We are going to celebrate all that she did. And there will be as eries of tributes to Aretha Franklin across the city in the coming days," Duggan said.

But for now all eyes are set on Franklin's home going celebration/ Mayor Duggan says it's too early to know what part the city will play in her funeral service.

"I think you can assume it will be a major event," he said.
