Shukur, 30, was hit by a car as he was working crowd control at a peace vigil at McNichols near Stahelin around 2:40 a.m. on August 4. Shukur was walking to his car when he was hit by a speeding SUV. The driver sped between the officer's cars disregarding their flashing lights.

The driver fled the scene on but turned himself in hours later. A Belleville man, 19-year-old Jonathan Cole, has been arrested and charged with second-degree murder in the incident. He's also accused of flushing his system before he turned himself in

Shukur was a Navy veteran who continued to protect and serve when he became an officer with the Detroit Police Department just over a year ago. He worked on the city's west side with the 8th Precinct. He was just married a month ago.

Shukur had been on life support immediately after the crash, before he died 11 days later

This is the third Detroit police officer who has died this year in the line of duty.

Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder ordered the lowering for U.S. and Michigan flags at state buildings and within the state Capitol complex Monday in honor of Shukur.
